I admit, even as a Scottsdale personal trainer, I have looked at the stationary bike as the mode for the lazy! An easy way to do nothing while faking that you are exercising. It wasn’t until when I took a spin class on a cruise that I was awakened to the fact that biking “done right” is not for pansies!

Yet, the key point I want to make is biking must be “done right.” In other words, you must work up a rigorous sweat. As a Scottsdale personal trainer I have witnessed people set dinner reservations on their cell phone while “working out”. You simply can not pedal along while stopping to smell the roses. To gain the benefits from biking you must prepare yourself to actually WORK! Get mentally ready… be present, think SWEAT! How do you do that you ask?

Ditch the book, put away the cell phone, and dig your feet in. Sorry, but it is my job as a Scottsdale personal trainer to challenge to dig deeper and try harder. It can be easy to zone out on the bike and get distracted, but stay involved with your body by making sure you are breathing and pushing with intention. The bike can be a fantastic fat burning tool and even though you are sitting on your butt some of the time, it can still BURN baby BURN. Fire up your fat -burning potential by shocking your body with an intense bike ride. The recumbent or upright bike will do just fine.

Pedal the bike as hard and as fast as you can for one minute on a moderate resistance level… then slow it down until you start breathing more normal again. Just when you feel like your heart rate has recovered… furiously start to pedal again. This on and off again interval training has been proven over and over again to BLAST fat and scorch calories. Try this for 3o minutes and tell me if your not “beat up”! And again, remember to stay focused! You know it’s working if your quads are screaming and your lungs are grappling for air. Take it from your Scottsdale personal trainer:

No pain, no gain!
