The New Army Physical Standards

For the first time in 30 years the Army is working on changing the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). The Army is heating up the intensity of physical requirements for soldiers. Right now they are running trials on the new standards at 8 different bases. Depending on the reviews, this new standard could be adopted Army-wide by the end of the year.

The Army is toughening up on the standards to ensure that all soldiers have the speed, strength, and agility required for battle. This new standard comes on the heels of recent efforts to better soldier’s diets and physical readiness.

In addition, a new standard is being implemented because some old tests have been found to be less relevant and applicable. For example, being able to do several sit-ups does not translate into the skills needed on a battlefield. The overhaul of training is meant to test the soldiers on things that are useful and functional in relation to battle.

The new “physical readiness” test is a 60 yard shuttle run, 1 minute rower exercise(replaces sit ups), standing long jump, followed immediately by one minute of pushups and a 1.5 mile timed run.

Think you could pass? How many non-stop pushups can you do in one minute? How fast is your 1.5 mile?

The Army Combat Readiness Test (ACRT) or “combat readiness” test requires soldiers to run in full combat gear 400 meters with a rifle, weaving through an obstacle course. They also must run along a balance beam while holding two 30 pound ammo boxes. Lastly, they have to complete an agility sprint through cones.

In order to test their ability to help a fallen comrade they must pull a 180 pound sled.

You can look at the pictures below and SEE why these tested skills are very applicable and relevant.

The requirements will all vary depending on gender and age. The test will be given to all soldiers and officers, which includes army reserves, national guard and recalled soldiers.

How tough are YOU? Are you “soldier” fit? I want to know !
